Treatments

Osteopathy for Babies

The birth process can be physically demanding, and while most babies adapt well, some may experience increased strain—particularly after a long labour, induction, ventouse delivery, or caesarean section. These factors can sometimes lead to areas of tension or “moulding” in the head, neck, or body.

Osteopaths believe that this retained tension may play a role in some minor early-life discomforts. Osteopathy offers a gentle, hands-on approach aimed at easing these tensions and supporting your baby’s natural development.

Osteopaths often work with lactation consultants and tongue tie practitioners to support breast feeding by gently releasing tension in the muscles of the jaw, face and neck.

What to Expect During Your Baby’s Appointment

Your osteopath will begin by taking a full health history, including information about pregnancy, birth, and your baby’s experiences so far.

This is followed by a gentle examination and treatment using light touch to help restore balance and support comfortable movement. Your baby’s comfort is always the priority—feeding, sleeping, or resting in a parent’s arms or lap during the session is completely normal.

Osteopathy for Mums

Mums can often experience pelvic girdle pain (PGP) during pregnancy. This can be felt as sciatica - a shooting pain down the leg, as well as pain in the pubic bone making it difficult to walk or get into a car or bed without pain. Osteopathy can help manage these conditions so that the mother is a mobile as possible up to and including birth.

Post natal Treatment

Karen has been working with women during pregnancy and in the post natal period for over 20 years, she has undertaken many courses in this field and more recently trained with the Mummy MOT group. The Mummy MOT is an evidence based training program which enables the practitioner to perform post natal assessments. Karen is an accredited practitioner.

What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a recognised system of healthcare that emphasises the body’s inherent ability to heal, regulate, and maintain its own health. It is founded on the principle that the structure and function of the body are closely interrelated, and that disturbances in the body’s mechanical framework can influence overall wellbeing.

Professional Training and Regulation

Osteopaths are statutorily regulated practitioners who complete comprehensive clinical and academic training. They are qualified to make conventional medical diagnoses and also to use skilled manual assessment to evaluate how the body is functioning. This hands-on approach allows osteopaths to identify subtle areas of strain, restriction, or dysfunction that may be contributing to a patient’s symptoms.

Karen is registered with the General Osteopathic Council

How Osteopaths Work

While patients often describe their concerns in terms of recognised medical conditions, osteopaths focus primarily on the underlying factors that may have led to those conditions, rather than on the conditions themselves. Treatment typically involves a range of manual techniques—such as soft-tissue work, mobilisation, and manipulation—with the aim of restoring optimal function and supporting the body’s natural capacity for recovery.

Osteopathy is commonly sought for musculoskeletal issues, including back and neck pain, joint problems, postural strain, and certain types of headaches.
